How The Website Came Into Existence
My wife and I first visited Lanzarote in 1983, staying in Puerto del Carmen. During our holiday, for a pleasant day out in the car, we drove down to Playa Blanca. Whilst at home we had seen some publicity about "timeshare" in Playa Blanca. We were not really interested, but we felt that it would be nice to see more of the island.
We were impressed with Playa Blanca. In those days it was little more than a fishing village. No buildings between the church and Papagayo Point in one direction, none between the harbour and the lighthouse on Pechiguera Point in the other.
We visited the timeshare estate. No one was to be seen, so we wandered around and looked in the show house. Guess what? We were soon hooked! By the time we returned home, we were the proud owners of timeshare weeks. Purchasing the timeshare was something we never regretted, not for one moment in the five years we owned it.
The time came, though, when we decided that we ought to buy a small place of our own. We could see that we would be returning to the island frequently. This was in 1988. Playa Blanca was still a small village. No street lights. Electricity in short supply. We had to take a torch with us when we ventured out of the estate after dark. Electricity power cuts were frequent as the island couldn't generate the extra electricity required for those extra cups of tea!
Over the years Playa Blanca (like the main tourist centres of Lanzarote) has grown out of all recognition. Hotels and bungalow estates have sprung up all over and over-development has become a problem. The Canary Islands Government has take steps to restrict further development. Thankfully, the development has been well controlled - no high rise buildings or roadside advertisements. The new hotels in Playa Blanca are spectacular - mostly five and four star hotels.
We also love returning to the UK each springtime. There are few nicer things than witnessing nature return to life after the wet and grey days of winter. Returning there one year (in the mid 90's) our son was full of this new phenomenon, the Internet. It was all very confusing to us - couldn't begin to understand how it all worked. Some of our son's enthusiasm rubbed off on me, however.
It wasn't too long before I bought a laptop and thought about creating a website.
The result, years later, is what you see here ...
